Gunter Construction Roofing is proud to be a part of the highest profile project in the Middle Tennessee / Kentucky area, The Adelphia Coliseum. Being a subcontractor on this job allows us a lot of 'bragging rites' - we hope you'll take a look at the Stadium the next time you drive through Nashville, Tennessee on I-65. History of the Project: On November 15, 1995 Nashville's Mayor Phil Bredeson and Houston Oilers' Owner Bud Adams agreed to bring the Oilers to Nashville. By May of 1996 a referendum was passed to build an open-air stadium for the new team on the East Bank of the Cumberland River in downtown Nashville. HOK Sports Facilities Group was hired to design and build the $292 million 67,000 seat stadium. (Other achievements of HOK of St. Louis, Missouri include: Jacksonville's Alltel Stadium, Miami's Joe Robbie Stadium, Charlotte's Ericsson Stadium and Baltimore's Camden Yards.) The Stadium is one of the largest construction projects ever undertaken in this region of the country. Tennessee Stadium Group (TSG) served as General Contractor, with Bovis, Jones and Jones, and Beers comprising the partnership of TSG. Over 65 companies, including subcontractors, consultants and others, were involved in this project; at times more than 1,200 people worked on site at the Stadium. After competitively bidding the project (and hours of intense negotiations), Gunter Construction Roofing was awarded the $879,670.00 roofing subcontract on January 21, 1997. Gunter Roofing Subcontract: To handle the tight confines of the job site and to accommodate times when more than 1,200 people daily worked on the project, Gunter Roofing developed unique methods and procedures for managing its materials and its workforce. The innovative operations included storage and daily transport of materials from the home office in Scottsville, Kentucky, and development of a stocking crew who used all-terrain vehicles and wagons to distribute materials to all four levels of the stadium via outside stadium pedestrian ramps. These ingenious procedures helped to assure a job well done on this unprecedented project. Adelphia Coliseum has a total roof area of 101,312 square feet (about 2.3 acres). There are a total of 105 different roofs on 4 levels ranging from 15 feet to 150 feet above ground elevation. The roofs cover 26 men's restrooms, 40 women's restrooms and 60 concession stands. The average size per roof is 965 square feet. The roof systems consist of 4 different configurations: Firestone Mechanically Fastened EPDM membrane, Ballasted EPDM membrane, Firestone Mechanically Fastened Ultra Ply PVC membrane and Ballasted Ultra Ply PVC membrane. The Ballasted systems were used for duel purposes -- aesthetics and protection from the cigarette butts and other bash from football fans. PVC was used mainly over concession stands to protect the roofs from grease emitted by exhaust fans. All roof systems were installed over 2-inch polyisocyanurate roof insulation and fastened to the deck with pre-assembled roofing screws and insulation plates. Gunter Roofing formed 10,500 LF of parapet wall coping in their sheet metal manufacturing facility in Scottsville, Kentucky using 24 gauge galvanized steel with a 20 year paint finish. In addition, Gunter negotiated a change order to install over 25,000 board feet of pressure treated wood blocking on the roof and parapet walls. |
